Google has integrated its Gemini AI into Gmail, allowing users to receive summaries of their emails, the company announced at its Google I/O 2024 developer conference. This feature aims to streamline email management by providing concise overviews of email conversations, facilitating quicker responses.
Enhanced Email Search and Summarization
Gemini AI in Gmail will search through an entire email backlog and present a summary in a sidebar. This addresses the challenge of traditional email searches, where users must open each email individually to read its contents. The AI will generate bullet-point summaries of emails from specific contacts, along with a list of sources that link directly to the original emails.
Gemini AI can also aggregate and summarize emails around specific topics. For example, users can request a comparison of roof repair bids by price and availability, and the AI will compile and summarize the relevant information from multiple emails. This feature is particularly useful for managing projects that involve multiple correspondences.
Google refers to this new capability as “Gemini Pro in Workspace Labs”, and it is expected to be available within the month. The integration of Gemini AI into Gmail represents a major advancement in email management, offering users a powerful tool to enhance productivity and efficiency.
Seamless Email Replies and Additional Features
The AI’s functionalities extend to composing and sending emails. In a demonstration, a user typed a command to reply with a willingness to volunteer for an event, and the AI instantly sent the email without requiring further confirmation. This feature promises to save users time by automating routine email responses.
Gemini 1.5 Pro in the side panel of Gmail, Docs, Drive, Slides, and Sheets will use a longer context window and more advanced reasoning to answer a wider variety of questions and provide more insightful responses. Summaries will appear in the side panel, suggested prompts, and more.
Gemini in the Workspace side panel is available for Workspace Labs and Gemini for Workspace Alpha users, and it will be available next month on desktop for businesses and consumers through Gemini for Workspace add-ons and the Google One AI Premium plan.
Mobile App Enhancements
New features in the Gmail mobile app include contextual smart reply and Gmail Q&A, which will offer options like “summarize this email,” “list the next steps,” or “suggest a reply.” These features will be available to Workspace Labs users on mobile and web starting in July.
