Living in the digital age has many advantages, especially when it comes to writing. Compared to the days of the typewriter or the printing press, we should consider ourselves grateful for tools like Microsoft Word. But like all great things, there is a catch. Although tools like Microsoft Word have made it incredibly easy to create and share information, there are some drawbacks.
By working remotely from one another, we are constantly sharing large amounts of data with each other. And in this process, it’s common for data to become damaged or corrupted. Fortunately, with tools like Microsoft Repair Tool from Recovery Toolbox for Word, you can fix and damaged word document in a matter of minutes. So next time you’re dealing with a corrupted Microsoft Word file, try using Recovery Toolbox’s Online Microsoft Repair Tool or their Offline Microsoft Repair Tool Software.
Using Recovery Toolbox for Repairing Word Documents 365
Understanding how Word documents can get damaged will help you mitigate these issues in the future and fix your current dilemma. In general, users are repairing Word Documents 365 for one of the following reasons:
- The computer fell asleep while downloading the document
- A broken HDD
- Failure to recover files deleted from the Recycle Bin
While many people have encountered issues with damaged files, there haven’t been many options for repairing Word Documents 365 until recently. One way to repair damaged Word Documents files is by using the Windows-built solutions offered in Microsoft Word.
Using the Microsoft Word Repair Tool
Microsoft Word has its own built-in document repair tool since the MS Word 2007 version. This built-in tool allows users to restore lost files and fix files that are not working. It’s likely the safest tool to use since it is proprietary software.
Here’s how to use the MS Word Repair Tool:
- Open Microsoft Word
- Press Ctrl + O or go to the File and select Open
- Search for the damaged file and ensure it is highlighted by clicking on it
- Go to the Open button, click the arrow pointing downward, then select the Open and Repair
At this point, the tool will attempt to repair the file, but it’s not guaranteed. If the file is still damaged, try the following method.
Recover the Unsaved Document
If the AutoSave feature was on before the file became infected, there is a chance the damaged file may be saved as an older version in Unsaved Files. All Office 2003 and newer software has this feature (and it is a great reason to turn AutoSave on).
Here is how to recover an older version of the damaged Word file:
- Start Microsoft Word, Go to File > Info
- Go to Manage Versions, and tap Recover Unsaved Documents
- All previously saved Word Autosaved files will appear
- Choose the damaged file, then save it to a new location. Press the File and Save as
Please note that the file might not include the last changes made before the damage occurred. If the file was damaged because your computer closed or rebooted, this step might not work. In that case, try the next option.
Restore Text from Any File
Microsoft Word has a unique feature that helps users recover text from any type of file, which includes damaged Microsoft Word files. It is much better to use this native option, although users may be unable to recover images and formatting from the damaged file.
Here’s how to recover text from a damaged Word file:
- Start Microsoft Word
- Click File from the Microsoft Word above panel and click Open or press Ctrl + O
- Navigate to where the corrupted file is saved and click it so the file is highlighted
- Select on the combo box written All Files to get a drop-down list. And Go to Recover Text from Any File
- Click on the HTML File and click on Open
- Microsoft Word will process the file and display the textual data. (You may find new lines that make no sense, ignore them).
- Save the file to a new location, and you can start working again.
Please note that this method may not always work. If that’s the issue, you can try the following method.
Open with Notepad
If none of the above solutions work, users can use the Notepad app. Notepad is another word processor that can bypass a document’s structure and access the textual content from the damaged file. This means you will lose any images and formatting from the original damaged file; however, the process is relatively easy.
Here’s how to use Notepad to recover a damaged Word file:
- Select the corrupt Word file to highlight it
- Right-click on the file and select the Open With an option, then click Default Program and open using Notepad
- Go to Other Programs, tap on the arrow that points downward to see all the available programs
- Scroll down and click on Notepad
- Ensure that you have unchecked all written boxes. Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
- Click OK
Go to the Notepad window that opens next. A window displaying several error messages may appear indicating Notepad cannot display images and formatting. Users will also find the text that was initially typed into the Word document. Copy and paste the text into a new Word file and start working on it.

Unfortunately, many damaged files cannot be recovered after trying all these built-in methods. While these methods are a great first step in attempting to recover a damaged Word file, they are not the only solutions.
