Music streaming service Spotify now automatically translates podcasts into multiple languages using artificial intelligence (AI). The new feature, developed by Spotify in collaboration with OpenAI, promises to deliver translations that retain the original speaker’s voice and style, offering a more authentic and personalized listening experience compared to conventional dubbing methods. The AI-dubbing feature leverages OpenAI’s cutting-edge voice generation technology, allowing a podcast recorded in one language to be accessible in others while preserving the speaker’s unique vocal characteristics.
Pilot Program and Collaborations
Spotify’s initial pilot program features AI-powered voice translations of selected episodes from renowned podcasters such as Dax Shepard, Monica Padman, Lex Fridman, Bill Simmons, and Steven Bartlett. These episodes are available in several languages, including Spanish, French, and German. “By matching the creator’s own voice, Voice Translation gives listeners around the world the power to discover and be inspired by new podcasters in a more authentic way than ever before,” remarked Ziad Sultan, VP of Personalization at Spotify. The company envisions this AI-driven approach fostering deeper connections between listeners and creators, aligning with Spotify’s mission to unlock human creativity’s potential.
Global Accessibility and Future Endeavors
The translated episodes from the pilot are accessible globally to both Premium and Free Spotify users. The initial release focuses on Spanish translations, with French and German versions to follow shortly. Eager listeners can explore these episodes on the dedicated Voice Translations Hub, which will continue to be updated with more content in the coming weeks and months. With over 100 million users regularly tuning into podcasts on Spotify, the platform is committed to exploring innovative solutions to enhance storytelling and overcome linguistic barriers. The feedback from the pilot will be instrumental in shaping future expansions and innovations, as Spotify aims to extend this feature to more creators and languages.
