Frontier Model Forum: Microsoft, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google Unite to Address Potential Risks of Advanced AI

Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google have launched the Frontier Model Forum, a new organization to oversee the safe development of frontier AI.

-

, Google, Microsoft and Anthropic, four of the leading companies in artificial intelligence research and development, have announced the creation of a new organization called the Frontier Model Forum (FMF). The FMF aims to foster collaboration and coordination among the members to ensure that the development of frontier AI models, or AI systems that can surpass human capabilities in multiple domains, is aligned with human values and beneficial for society.

The Frontier Model Forum was formed in response to the growing concerns about the potential risks and challenges posed by frontier AI, such as ethical dilemmas, social impacts, accountability issues, and existential threats. The FMF will establish common standards and best practices for frontier AI research, development, deployment, and governance, as well as promote public awareness and education on the opportunities and challenges of frontier AI.

With the Frontier Model Forum, the companies will also support the creation of a global network of frontier AI researchers, developers, policymakers, and stakeholders, who will share their insights and expertise on frontier AI issues and collaborate on solving them. The FMF will also fund and facilitate frontier AI projects that have positive social and environmental impacts, such as tackling climate change, improving health care, enhancing education, and advancing human rights.

Self-stated goals of the Frontier Model Forum

  • “Advancing AI safety research to promote responsible development of frontier models, minimize risks, and enable independent, standardized evaluations of capabilities and safety.
  • Identifying best practices for the responsible development and deployment of frontier models, helping the public understand the nature, capabilities, limitations, and impact of the technology.
  • Collaborating with policymakers, academics, civil society and companies to share knowledge about trust and safety risks.
  • Supporting efforts to develop applications that can help meet society's greatest challenges, such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, early cancer detection and prevention, and combating cyber threats.”

Frontier AI refers to AI systems that are capable of performing tasks that are currently beyond the capabilities of humans. These tasks could include things like writing creative text, translating languages, and making complex decisions. Frontier AI has the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives, but it also poses some potential risks. For example, if a frontier AI system were to become malicious, it could cause a lot of harm.

Brad Smith, Vice Chair & President, Microsoft said: “Companies creating AI technology have a responsibility to ensure that it is safe, secure, and remains under human control. This initiative is a vital step to bring the tech sector together in advancing AI responsibly and tackling the challenges so that it benefits all of humanity.”
