ChatGPT Moves to GPT-3.5 for Newer Information, but Still Lags behind Bing Chat

OpenAI is updating ChatGPT to GPT-3.5, which will mean up-to-date information more in line with Microsoft’s Bing Chat.

ChatGPT is an ultra-popular chatbot that was developed by OpenAI. It has had a major role in mainstreaming AI, along with Microsoft’s Bing Chat. Both bots use the GPT engine from OpenAI, but Bing Chat runs on GPT-4, which is the latest version of OpenAI’s technology. Now, the company says it is updating ChatGPT to provide more current information.

One of the benefits Bing Chat has over ChatGPT is it provides current up-to-date information. ChatGPT is limited to offering information up until 2021. The reason for the difference is Microsoft’s chatbot runs on the newer AI model.

ChatGPT was developed by OpenAI. It is a deep learning system that can generate coherent and fluent texts on almost any topic, given a few words or sentences as input. The tool has attracted a lot of attention and investment from various industries and companies, such as Microsoft, which has poured $10 billion into OpenAI.

Microsoft has leveraged that partnership to mainstream AI across its services. GPT-4 now underpins now AI solutions such as Office (Microsoft 365 Copilot), Bing (Bing Chat and Bing Image Creator), Microsoft Cloud (Azure OpenAI Service), CRM/ERP (Dynamics 365 Copilot), and programming (GitHub Copilot X).

ChatGPT is Coming Up-to-Date, But Bing Chat Remains More Powerful

OpenAI says it is now bringing GPT-3.5 browsing to the chatbot. However, it will only be available for the ChatGPT Plus scubecription version of the bot, which costs $20 per month. If you do not want to give OpenAI – which used to be not-for-profit – your money and use the free ChatGPT, you will still be limited to older information.

As you might expect, OpenAI is not leveraging Google Search to provide the information ChatGPT with GPT-3.5 scrapes. Instead, the chatbot will tap into Microsoft’s Bing. Of course, this makes all the sense considering Microsoft is a multi-billion-dollar investor in OpenAI and essentially part-owner of the org these days.

It is curious that OpenAI is not using GPT-4 in its own chatbot, meaning Bing Chat is still overall a more powerful option than ChatGPT.

Tip of the day: Windows Update downloads can often be frustrating because they are several gigabytes in size and can slow down your internet connection. That means your device may work with reduced performance while the update is downloading. In our guide we show you how to limit bandwidth for Windows Update downloads, so they won’t bother you again.
