Report: OpenAI Co-Founder Elon Musk Working on ChatGPT Rival

Elon Musk reportedly wants to create a new AI research lab that will compete with OpenAI and the ChatGPT chatbot.

A new report suggests Elon Musk is working with AI researchers in an effort to create a rival to ChatGPT, the all-conquering chatbot from OpenAI. According to The Information, the billionaire CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and Twitter wants to form a new AI research lab.

Musk has contacted Igor Babuschin, an AI researcher who has a history on the development team of Google’s DeppMind AI. The report claims Musk wants to create a new research group, presumably with Babuschin taking a leading role.

The overall goal is to provide rival AI to OpenAI, specifically the ChatGPT chatbot. In recent months, ChatGPT has brought AI into the mainstream. Microsoft has invested billions of dollars more into OpenAI and is leveraging the group’s AI across its services, including in the new Bing chat search engine.

Of course, Musk has a direct link to open AI as he was one of the co-founders of the research and development group. He was the chairman of OpenAI until he moved on in 2018 because of a conflict of interest with his other companies.

Mainstream AI

Musk was a major critic of Microsoft becoming a major investor in OpenAI. His concern rested on Microsoft having exclusive access to OpenAI’s GPT AI engine. In general, Musk has been a voice of concern regarding the rapid growth of AI and the dangers of running before walking.

Microsoft and other tech companies like Google, Spotify, and Snapchat are moving full steam ahead. It will be interesting to see how Musk would position an AI product against these giants.
