Last week we reported on the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the company’s latest flagship gaming CPU. While the chipset is already besting Intel’s rival Core i9-12900KS chip, it had one obvious flaw. Specifically, the lack of overclocking. AMD was saying the Ryzen 7 5800X3D was a locked chip but seems to be backtracking and will allow overclocking.
It is worth noting it was never going to be impossible to overclock the CPU. However, overclocking a locked chipset is complex, which meant the new Ryzen 7 is arguably unappealing to enthusiasts. Currently, early users/reviewers are overclocking the chip via BCLK (base clock).
According to OC3D on Twitter, AMD is now making last-minute changes to the 5800X3D to add overclocking support. This will be provided by the AMD Curve Optimizer, a handy feature that was launched in 2020 and gives the ability to have per core voltage-frequency changes on the company’s chips.
As far as we are aware, AMD is working to enable a form of overclocking on this chip. We will look into this if/when the time comes.

This new chipset has 3D V-cache tech and benchmarks show the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D bests Intel’s leading Core i9. In a recent Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark, AMD already showed its pre-launch boasts are accurate.
Further benchmarks show that was no fluke and the Ryzen 7 is outperforming the i9-12900KS across the board. According to a review from XanxoGaming, the 3D V-cache helps AMD push beyond its rival and completely beats out the Core i9.
