Most people communicate by messaging services using regular text or voice calls, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, or something like Microsoft Teams in a business setting. So, when you get a phone call these days, there is always that brief moment of surprise. At least until you remember that every call you have is a “Robocall.”
Yes, scam calls are rampant and once your phone number is already known to callers, it will be on a perpetual wheel of constant Robocalls. According to wireless carrier T-Mobile, 2021 was a record-setting year where the company blocked 21 billion scam calls.
Not only did T-Mobile customers have the annoyance of all those Robocall scams, it would have also cost them a total of $29.8 billion during 2021. Let’s remember, this is just T-Mobile’s network, so doesn’t include other major carriers like Verizon and AT&T.
In the T-Mobile Scam and Robocall year-end report, the company says attempted scam traffic increased 116 percent year on year, amounting to 425 million each week.
“Attempted scam calls hit record highs in 2021, but with Scam Shield we are identifying or blocking an average 1.8 billion calls each month – or 700 calls per second! – for our T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile customers,” Jon Freier, president of T-Mobile’s Consumer Group, says about the report’s findings.
“We know that scammers won’t stop as long as they continue to be successful, so we are doing everything we can to make their job as hard as possible,” Freier points out.
Data from the report shows that Robocalls are most frequent during standard business hours and drop 80 percent during weekends. This is because many fraudsters mask themselves as legitimate businesses to fool unwitting customers.
The most common type of robocall is fake vehicle warranty companies, taking 51 percent. Next were Social Security offers, false wireless services, and car insurance.
