Microsoft Says It Won’t Support Windows 11 on M1 Macs

While Parallels Desktop 17 allows users to run Windows 11 on Mac, Microsoft says it will not support the platform on Apple’s OS.

-

Parallels is a company that creates emulators to run one platform on another, including working with Google directly to bring Windows 10 to Google’s Chrome OS. Now the company says its latest Desktop 17 platform can run Windows 11 on Apple Macs. It will even work on Macs running Apple’s M1 chip, as well as Intel-based models.

While Windows 11 will run through Parallels Desktop 17, it will only be the Windows on ARM variant that works. Users will also need to have a virtual hard disk file of a Windows Insider Preview build. Whether this will change when Windows 11 launches fully next month remains to be seen.

This is likely to be the best it gets for running Windows 11 on Mac for the time being. When speaking to The Register recently, a Microsoft spokesperson says putting Windows 11 on M1 Macs is not likely to happen.

Risk

So the message is clear, you can install Windows 11 on M1 and Intel Macs, but do so at your own risk.

As for Parallels, it remains there for users who simply must have Windows 11 on their Mac device, for whatever reason. Desktop 17 is now available an costs $79.99 per year for the standard version. If you want a perpetual license, or the Business/Pro versions, it will cost you $99.99 each year.

Tip of the day: Hard drives are getting faster and more affordable every day, but unfortunately, their moving parts will always make them loud and mean their power draw isn’t insignificant. This can be a particular issue for those with laptops, leading many to wonder how to turn off a hard disk after it reaches an idle state. In our tutorial we are showing you Windows 10: How to Turn off Hard Disk after Idle to Save Power .
