Microsoft’s New Windows File Recovery Rescues Accidentally Deleted Files

Windows File Recovery is a new application that allows users to retrieve numerous types of files and documents after deletion.

-

has rolled out a new app that will help users retrieve files that have been accidentally deleted. Called Windows File Recovery, the app is available now from the .

Windows File Recovery is a command line tool that will retrieve various file types and documents. It can pull deleted content from hard drivers as well as expanded storage like USB drives and SD cards. However, those who use cloud storage are out of luck because they are not supported.

As you might expect, there's a limited amount of time between deleting a file and being able to recover it. That's because the drive could overwrite the content and it will be removed permanently.

Microsoft says the Windows File Recovery app works with JPEG images, MP4 videos, MP3 files, PDF documents, and regular documents such as , PowerPoint, and Excel.

Modes

There are two modes available with the new app:

  • Firstly, there is a default mode that works with NTFS file systems. Using this default allows users to recover files from corrupted disks or when a disk has been formatted.
  • Secondly, there's a signature mode that allows users to choose specific files to recover on FAT, exFAT, and ReFS file systems. While this mode will likely be more popular, it is worth noting files will take longer to be retrieved.

Needless to say, by it's very nature Windows File Recovery is a useful tool to have around. It's one of those applications that you hope you'll never need to use. However, if you do accidentally delete an important file, the app will come in handy.

The new app is available from the Microsoft Store here.

Using 3rd party tools for data recovery

Instead of using Microsofts command-line based tool, third-party software for file recovery are often the better option. Remo data recovery offers powerful solutions for Windows and macOS that help bringing back deleted files, folders and even whole partitions.

If the above-mentioned software cannot recover your lost data correctly, you may want to give Tenorshare 4DDiG a try.
