Last month, Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 May 2020 Update (version 2004). However, as we have reported in the proceeding weeks, the update caused its fair share of problems for users. Microsoft issued a block across an array of devices, including some of its own Surface hardware.
Yesterday was June 2020 Patch Tuesday and one of the fixes released was a patch for the issues blocking those Surface products. This means some Surface users who install the patch can now download Windows 10 May 2020 Update.
However, users of the Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7 will still have to wait to receive the update.
One of the problems Surface device owners reported was unscheduled restarts for devices using multiple Always Connected network adapters. With the release of update KB4557957, Microsoft says it has fixed this problem. However, the company says a hold will still be in place for some users:
“To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on Windows 10 devices with affected drivers or firmware from being offered Windows 10, version 2004.”
May 2020 Update Problems
Over the weeks following the release of Windows 10 May 2020 Update, several issues have emerged. Earlier this month, we reported on the new update causing Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) errors for some users. According to Microsoft, an incompatibility issue with Nvidia display driver version 358.00 or older triggers BSOD errors in Windows 10 May 2020 Update.
Yesterday we discussed a bug causing external displays to go black.
“If you have a device running Windows 10 version 2004 with a built-in screen (such as a laptop or tablet) and a connected external display set to Duplicate your primary screen, you might see both monitors flicker and the external monitor go black if you try to draw using an Office app (such as Word),” Microsoft said.
