Microsoft has this week rolled out an optional Windows 10 update that covers all supported versions of the platform. Importantly, this is the last optional release for some time after Microsoft postponed these updates amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last month, Microsoft said it will ease pressure on developers by postponing optional updates. As the COVID-19 outbreak continues to hamper the ability of developers, the decision made sense. At the time, the company confirmed the suspension would start in May.
“We have been evaluating the public health situation, and we understand this is impacting our customers. In response to these challenges we are prioritizing our focus on security updates,” said Microsoft.
It now seems that will happen sooner with this week’s optional being the last for the foreseeable future. As always, this release is a non-security update that users don’t need to install if they don’t want to.
Microsoft has updated Windows 10 versions 1909 and 1903 with 30 bug fixes. Furthermore, the update is also available for version 1809, which has received a six-month extended support due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Squashing Bugs
As noted, these identical updates are for non-security issues. However, they will address issues that affect performance, which could be helpful for remote workers. For example, Microsoft points to a fix for a bug that prevented apps from opening following a Windows 10 update.
All 30 bugs are packaged in the KB4550945 update, which bumps Windows 10 version 1903 up to build 18362.815 and 1909 up to build 18363.815. Users can pull in the update through Windows Update by heading to Settings>Update & Security>Windows Update. Links to the patch will be available under the Optional updates subsection.
