Facebook for Windows 10 is officially a thing of the past. After an earlier email to some users, it has disappeared entirely from the Store, as well as its beta version. Both Facebook and Microsoft have confirmed to Neowin that this was a deliberate move and that no replacement is incoming.
“As of February 28, the Facebook desktop app for Windows is no longer available. People can still easily access and enjoy all of the features of Facebook via desktop browser.”
Representatives assured Neowin that Messenger and Instagram will stay on the store, presenting a bit of a confused strategy from the company. However, it’s entirely possible that the Facebook app had a small userbase next to the others. After all, it doesn’t offer too much the web version doesn’t, and doesn’t benefit as much from Windows notifications.
Microsoft’s new Edge browser lets users create a PWA-like experience with any page, so that’s the recommended route for any upset users.
“For the best experience, make sure you’re using the most current version of our supported browsers including the new Microsoft Edge,” Microsoft said in a previous email.
For the uninitiated you can pin a web app to your start in Chromium Edge via ‘…>Apps>Install this site as an app’. This opens it in a new window when launched, keeping it separate from your general browsing experience without taking up any extra space.
