Despite Microsoft and Qualcomm’s best efforts, the Windows 10 on ARM project has been largely unsuccessful. Consumers have been lukewarm on ARM-powered Windows devices. Still, Microsoft is continuing to push the initiative, including through its own ARM Surface Pro X.
However, many PC manufacturers are yet to jump on board with Windows 10 on ARM. Huawei is among those companies that has not released an ARM laptop. Still, it seems the Chinese company is now making moves towards the initiative.
As we have seen with Huawei in other avenues, Huawei will use its own hardware. Qualcomm’s ARM chips have powered Windows 10 on ARM devices so far. Nevertheless, Huawei will like to use its own ARM processor.
For the company’s ARM PC, the proprietary Kunpeng 920 ARM processor built on the Kunpeng D920S10 desktop motherboard, will likely be the silicon of choice. Huawei recently announced both the motherboard and ARM chip.
Kunpeng D920S10 motherboard supports up to 64GB of DDR-2400 RAM and up to six SATA 3.0 drives. It also boasts PCIe slots, four USB 3.0 ports, and four USB 2.0 ports.
Windows Reprieve
Last month, Huawei received an extension on its ability to receive software updates for Microsoft products. The US Department of Commerce has approved another 90-day window for the Chinese company.
With the reprieve, Microsoft is able to grant or deny applications and allow licenses for products exported by Huawei. This means Huawei will have extended access to Microsoft’s software on PC. However, it is worth noting this remains a temporary solution and licenses are still scheduled to be revoked.
Either way, it seems Huawei will continue to build Windows-based PCs.
