Microsoft Edge on Mobile Receives New Shopping Feature

A new dedicated shopping tool is now available on Microsoft Edge on iOS and Android, based on Bing and using a device’s GPS.

Microsoft Edge on iOS and Android has been given a new tool to help users shop more easily. In a tweet, Edge Mobile Senior PM, Aneetha Jayaraman, confirmed the new tool.

With the shopping add-in, users will see a shopping icon when they fire up the Microsoft Edge app on iOS and Android. Clicking the icon moves users to a new page that shows curated products and deals available.

Of course, this is not a collection of random products but will be determined by your activity. According to Microsoft, the feature also taps into your device GPS to find deals that are available nearby.

Users are also able browse by category or by choosing how far from a location the results show.

Microsoft Edge shopping is powered by the company’s Bing search engine. As you may know, Bing has a decent market share in the United States, but not much traction everywhere else. With that in mind, the shopping tool is currently limited to the U.S.

At Ignite 2019, one of Microsoft’s biggest consumer-fronted announcements was the launch date for Chromium Edge. The company revealed the new version of its web browser will leave preview on January 15, 2020. However, the browser will arrive without some features, among them ARM support.

Tracking Prevention Problems

Earlier this week, we reported on Edge’s Tracking Prevention feature blocking Google Analytics.

Tracking prevention comes with a Balanced setting out of the box, with users able to tune it to Strict or Basic plans. The settings affect the type of trackers the browser will block, with Strict only blocking “harmful” trackers.
