Microsoft’s Upcoming Surface Laptop 3 to Have AMD CPU Instead of Intel

Microsoft is reportedly opting for AMD processors for its new 15-inch Surface Laptop 3 instead of long-time chip partner Intel.

Earlier today, we reported that is likely to launch a at its hardware launch event on October 2. After several years of incremental updates across Surface products, Microsoft seems to be making more sweeping changes. We discussed the new 15-inch Surface Laptop variant, but it seems Microsoft will also offer a variant with an AMD processor.

In opting for AMD, the company could be ditching for the 3. According to a report from WinFuture, the new 15-inch variant will be using AMD CPUs. That could mean the 13.5-inch variant will remain with Intel.

We first touched on this possibility in June, when it emerged Microsoft could be working on an AMD-powered Surface. Microsoft has used Intel chips in its Surface hardware exclusively over the last five years.

Reportedly, Intel's Skylake CPUs were particularly disappointing to Microsoft and gave the company a “black eye”. He goes as far as to say the relationship between Microsoft and Intel is now on “shaky ground”.

Certainly, AMD would see this as a major victory. While Surface Laptop sales are not staggering, it is a premium device and Intel has dominated such markets.

Surface Laptop Update

It seems Microsoft is transforming the Surface Laptop through its third generation. So much so that the company will avoid updating the Surface Book this year, instead focusing on the Surface Laptop 3.

If Microsoft does introduce a 15-inch Surface Laptop 3, the Surface range of hardware will become slightly blurred.

Both the Surface Book and Surface Pro devices are 2-in-1s that allow users to detach the screen as a tablet. If the Surface Laptop 3 gets a bigger variant, it will be a very similar product to the Surface Book, albeit without the detachable element.
