Microsoft Documentation Points to Windows Core OS Implementation

New Microsoft documentation shows details of the company’s Windows Core OS, the modular version of Windows 10.

has been working on Windows Core OS (WCOS), a modular version of , for some time. Details on the platform remain scarce, although it is expected to start life on the HoloLens 2 and Surface Hub 2X. According to new support documentation shows that development is potentially reaching fulfillment.

If you're unfamiliar with Windows Core OS (WCOS), it is a modular version of Windows 10. By creating a modular Windows experience, Microsoft can put the full power of Windows 10 on any device. WCOS will provide Microsoft with a platform that will work on mobile devices and PCs alike. Users on smartphones will be able to receive a full Windows 10 PC-quality experience.

As the platform would be expanding across form factors, it makes sense some aspects of Windows 10 will look different.

Documentation spotted by Windows Latest does not reveal too much, although does show the following bullet points:

  • wcmp The Windows Shell Composer ID.
  • wPId The Windows Core OS product ID.
  • wsId The Windows Core OS session ID.

Microsoft has not yet said what devices Windows Core OS will run across. We guess most peripheral Windows devices could receive the platform, which includes the upcoming console.

Job Posting

Back in February, Microsoft posted on LinkedIn to seek staff to work on the development of Windows Core OS. According to the LinkedIn job posting, Windows Core will leverage Microsoft's machine learning tools to provide security.

“Improved the security posture of Windows Components through initiatives that investigate vulnerabilities found and establish a process for remediation. Improved the overall Program Management skill set, communication, and throughout the WDG IS organization,” the description of the profile notes.
