Google Calendar Spam Issue Getting a Fix, but Not Yet

Google says a fix for a Google Calendar spam problem is incoming, but in the meantime users can follow workaround steps.

A recent issue in Calendar has seen users having to deal with, with the app randomly adding events without user input. Google has acknowledged the problem and says a fix is coming. In the meantime, the company has offered some workarounds for the problem.

If you are unfamiliar with the problem, it has been plaguing Google Calendar in recent weeks. Spam content typically arrives a fake event in the calendar that is either inaccurate, advertising a product, or pointing to an online dating scam.

Google says a fix is incoming but puts no firm data on its release, so you cant put it in your calendar (boom boom). “We're aware of the spam occurring in Calendar and are working diligently to resolve this issue.”

The company merely says updates will be added “as they become available”. However, Google Calendar users can follow these workarounds to avoid spam:

First:

  1. Open Calendar on the web and go to Settings
  2. Select “Event Settings” in the menu
  3. Click on the “Automatically add invitations” dropdown
  4. Select “No, only show invitations to which I have responded”

Next:

  1. Still on the Settings page, select “Events from Gmail” in the menu
  2. Uncheck “Automatically add events from Gmail to my calendar”
  3. Click “Okay” on the warning that pops up

Problem

It's good that Google has provided workarounds for the problem, but the general issue remains. Of course, a calendar app that fill in random spam entries is problematic. If you have experienced this issue, let us know in the comments if the problem will make you change to a different app.
