Microsoft Offers Free Windows 7 Patches Beyond End-of-Support

Despite Microsoft officially ending support for Windows 7 in January 2020, the company is offering a limited time promotion for enterprise users to receive security patches.

will be sunsetting in January 2020, ending support for the decade-old platform and ceasing security updates. However, Redmond knows many enterprise customers are still on Windows 7 and will not be able to make a migration to Windows 10 before end of support.

Ahead of the cut off Microsoft has been creating ways for enterprise users to continue to receive security patch. Another option for furthering Windows 7 security support beyond the official endgame has been rolled out.

This is a limited time promotion that Microsoft has not advertised much.

Enterprise Agreement (EA) and Enterprise Subscription Agreement (EAS) customers subscribed to E5, E5, or Microsoft 365 E5 Security can now choose to receive Windows 7 Extended Security Updates for a year. For those customers that opt in, patches will be rolled out at no additional charge.

“Enterprise Agreement and Enterprise Agreement Subscription (EA and EAS) customers with active subscription licenses to Windows 10 Enterprise E5, Microsoft 365 E5, or Microsoft 365 E5 Security will get Windows 7 Extended Security Updates for Year 1 as a benefit,” Microsoft said in a FAQ about the end of support for Windows 7 and Office 2010.

Continued Support

It is worth noting Microsoft had previously said it would stop free security updates after January 14, 2020. With the limited promotion customers can extend that window by another year to January 2021.

Microsoft has also introduced a security update program in 2018. It offers patches to Windows 7 until January 2023, although this comes with a fee charge.
