Microsoft has put a red light in front of the Windows 10 May 2019 Update (version 1903) for PCs with a Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver. People using machines with the driver are no longer able to update to the latest full version of Windows 10. Microsoft says the driver is updated and PCs using it are having connectivity problems once Win10 version 1903 is installed.
It is worth noting PCs running the Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver are old. Either way, Microsoft says a new Wi-Fi driver update will be sent through OEMs. That's a little problematic because some manufacturers may take longer than others to release the update.
Users on those PCs will not be able to download and install Windows 10 May 2019 Update until they have updated their Wi-Fi driver.
“To safeguard your upgrade experience, we have applied a hold on devices with this Qualcomm driver from being offered Windows 10, version 1903, until the updated driver is installed.”
Update Needed
Of course, Windows 10 1903 is also available through manual download. Microsoft says users going through Windows Update Assistant should avoid the May 2019 Update until their update the Qualcomm Wi-Fi driver.
“Workaround: Before updating to Windows 10, version 1903, you will need to download and install an updated Wi-Fi driver from your device manufacturer (OEM).
Note We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update using the Update now button or the Media Creation Tool until a new driver has been installed and the Windows 10, version 1903 feature update has been automatically offered to you.”
We think using the term workaround is a bit of a stretch as it seems the only way to avoid problems with the driver is to update it.
