WhatsApp is the world’s most used messaging tool, which is amazing considering it is locked in to mobile devices. Rivals like Facebook Messenger and Skype are also available on PC. Sure, you can download WhatsApp for PC, but the service is still dependent on a smartphone. A new rumor suggests that may be about to change.
Reliable WhatsApp watcher, WABetaInfo has released information that suggests the Facebook-owned company is developing a system that will remove smartphone dependence.
PC users who want WhatsApp currently have to connect the app or web version with a phone. This means if the phone is turned off or there is no connection, messages cannot be sent. According to WABetaInfo, a new multi-account system is being created to allow use on PC and phone separately.
The app will be Universal Windows Platform (UWP) and eventually be available in the Microsoft Store. Furthermore, the app will also be available on Apple’s iPad. In fact, it seems the reason the app is not yet available is because WhatsApp is preparing the app for iPad devices.
Integration
Unfortunately, the tipster does not offer any concrete information about when the multi-account app will be made available. That said, we would expect it to be launched some time during this year.
That makes sense because Facebook is in the midst of unifying its messaging services behind a single server back-end.
One of the obvious benefits of unifying its messaging service is enticing users to stay within its ecosystem. Currently, all three applications are separate. People may use Instagram for photo-based social media but may not feel any need to stay with Facebook for messaging. The company will hope tying the services together may appeal to users to stay within the ecosystem.
