Microsoft Remix 3D to Close in 2020, Putting Paint 3D’s Future in Doubt

Microsoft has confirmed its Remix 3D service will be closed next January, casting doubt on the long-term future of Paint 3D.

-

Two years ago, Microsoft introduced the Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) with an emphasis on 3D tools. Paint 3D and its Remix 3D feature were billed as the future of design interaction on Windows. However, users responded with a collective “meh”. Two years later, Microsoft is readying to shutter Remix 3D.

Microsoft watcher WalkingCat revealed Remix 3D will be shutdown next year. This report was confirmed by Microsoft’s own Rudy Hyun. The company has since followed with a banner on Remix3D.com that schedules the closure of the service for January 10, 2020.

Users are told in the notice to download and save their existing content because all content will be deleted when Remix 3D is shuttered. That means users will no longer be able to use the repository of 3D objects.

As mentioned, while Paint 3D is a fantastic tool with rich features on paper, users have not responded to it. They either didn’t want or need Paint to be anything more than the program they had used for years.

With Remix 3D now set to be killed off, the future of Paint 3D is also debatable. A lack of user support means Remix heading into the sunset is hardly a surprise. It would be a little bit more of an eyebrow raiser for Paint 3D to be closed, but it is an obvious eventuality for the service.

Google Poly

Shortly after Paint 3D and Remix were launched, Google announced its Poly service. It also allows users to use 3D objects and even works with Remix 3D and Paint 3D.

By leveraging Google VR, the 3D objects can be used in a virtual space through a headset.

“Poly lets you quickly find 3D objects and scenes for use in your apps, and it was built from the ground up with AR and VR development in mind,” Google says in a blog post.
