Microsoft is yet to begin testing for its next OS update, due in the second half of the year, despite a schedule of Spring for the first test builds. Summer officially started today, meaning the company has missed that self-imposed goal and opened concerns about whether the update will ship this year at all.
Instead, Insiders are currently focused on next year’s update, 20H1, as the company pushes changes that require more work. It did so due to a delay with 19H2, but fans are currently unaware of the cause for that delay, when 19H2 will launch, and if we can expect any major changes.
However, Windows Insider senior program manager Brandon LeBlanc says his team’s definition of Spring doesn’t necessarily line up with the global one.
“Our definition of ‘spring’ doesn’t necessarily match to exactly when spring ends and summer begins. It’ll happen when we’re ready. We’re not operating against a deadline. Call it a ‘delay’ if you want,” he said on Twitter.
Of course, when Microsoft thinks spring is quite irrelevant when it comes to the public. Insiders were told spring, so that’s what they expected, not an opaque timeframe. If it’s not a delay, it’s poor communication. This isn’t entirely uncommon for the company, but it’s not unfair for the volunteer-based Insiders to be unhappy.
