Intel’s New Whiskey Lake CPUs Deliver Security and Performance Gains

Intel has announced the 8th generation Whiskey Lake vPro U-series processors for mobile workers seeking scalability and security.

-

Intel has expanded its range of eight-generation processors by launching its newest vPro U-series of CPUs. The company has replaced the previous Kaby Lake R vPro U processors by moving to the Whiskey Lake family of silicon.

Kaby Lake U CPUs processors were the company’s seventh-generation CPUs, albeit with four cores instead of two. Whiskey Lake U processors are available as Core i5-8365U and Core i7-8665U.

Both new chipsets were created for mobile workers who require scalability and built-in security measures. Intel says it has gained a significant performance boost compared to the former generation of chipsets.

For example, the Whiskey Lake series can offer Wi-Fi 6 support with 40% faster connection speeds. Elsewhere, Intel has ensured improved WPA3 security. Network support is more robust, with networks now more scalable.

Because of their scalability and efficiency, vPro U-series processors can deliver per user savings of $300.

Intel has delivered more security too thanks to its Hardware Shield technology. The company says this feature adds hardened protection for the BIOS and shut it down if there is an attack. Importantly, no extra infrastructure is needed to use Hardware Shield.

The Core i5 and Core i7 feature quad cores with eight threads and a 15W TDP. In terms of the Core i5, it is a 1.6GHz clock speed CPU that can be maxed to 4.1GHz with a 6MB cache. Intel’s new Core i7-U delivers a 1.9GHz clock speed that can be maxed to 4.8GHz. This chip has an 8MB cache.

OEM partners are already integrating the new chips into their products, including Dell, Lenovo, and HP.
