Open source developer Mozilla has today debuted a free file transfer solution called Firefox Send. The company admits there are plenty of cloud storage services, but believes it can do it better and importantly, more securely.
Firefox Send is rolling out to everyone today on desktop, which Mozilla also announced a Send beta for Android devices. In an accompanying blog post, the non-profit points out Firefox Send is an extension of its commitment to security and privacy:
“It’s part of our long-standing Mozilla Manifesto. We are continually looking for new ways to fulfill that promise, whether it’s through the browser, apps or services. So, it felt natural to graduate one of our popular Test Pilot experiments, Firefox Send, send.firefox.com.”
Send is a cloud storage and file transfer service that provides end-to-end encryption and customizable security controls. The former ensures information sent by the user is secure throughout the sharing process, with the data locked until the file is opened by the recipient.

As for security controls, users are able to select when a file link expires, how many times it can be downloaded, and whether to place a password on the file.
File Sizes
Mozilla says sending large files on Firefox Send is easy, making it an excellent tool for collaborations, presentations, and enterprise needs. Users can use the service to send up to 1GB files in a quick send feature that is free to use and requires no sign up. To send files up to 2.5GB there is also no charge, although users will need a Firefox account.
“Send makes it easy for your recipient, too. No hoops to jump through. They simply receive a link to click and download the file. They don’t need to have a Firefox account to access your file. Overall, this makes the sharing experience seamless for both parties, and as quick as sending an email.”
