One of the things that has made Minecraft so successful has been its wide availability on just about any gaming device you can think of. The world’s second most popular game ever has been on all consoles, on mobile devices, and of course on PC. However, Microsoft is pulling the plug on some Minecraft versions.
The company has decided Minecraft will no longer be supported on last-generation gaming systems. Users on the PlayStation 3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, and Wii U will still be able to play the game. However, Microsoft will no longer add new features to these versions.
Mojang, the Swedish developer of Minecraft, confirmed the news as it announced its Nightmare Before Christmas Mash-Up pack.
While it is always disappointing to see a company drop support for a product, Mojang has been more than generous to the last generation. From myriad new features to support long after devices like the Xbox 360 were replaced can only be commended.

As for the new Mash-Up pack, Minecraft is scoring plenty of new goodies. Among them are 40 skins and a texture pack. In the blurb for the update, Mojang confirms that this is only for current gen supported systems:
“As well as those 40 skins, you get a texture pack and a world full of some truly nightmarish redstone puzzles to solve, all scored to the excellent soundtrack from the movie! I most certainly got my wish, and it’s available from today on all Minecraft platforms that have the Minecraft Marketplace (so that’s Minecraft on Xbox One, Windows 10 Edition, iOS, Android and Nintendo Switch).”
