's September 2018 update for Office 2016 on Mac is now available to Insiders for testing. Users of the Office Insider Program are getting some new features with the release. As this is the September update, wider Office 2016 for Mac users will receive the upgrade later in the month.

With this release, Office 2016 is moving up to version 16.17.180904 on Apple's platform. Among the new features coming to users on Mac is LaTex equation support in .

In its release notes, Microsoft explains customers have frequently requested this support. With LaTex equations in Word, users already have a wide range of mathematical keywords.

Word is also gaining support for @mentions, alongside fellow Office 2016 for Mac app PowerPoint. This is a feature that is already available in Windows apps, such as Outlook. The feature allows users to easily tag in contacts by typing @ and then the first letters of a name.

Below is the full changelog:

  • Get their attention with @mentions: Use @mentions in comments to let co-workers know you need their input.
  • Draw with ink: Use your mouse or touch pad, and the pens on the Draw tab to write, draw, and highlight.
  • Insert 3D models to see all the angles: Easily insert a 3D model, and then rotate it through 360 degrees.
  • LaTeX equation support: You asked for it! You can now create math equations using LaTeX syntax.
  • Custom shortcuts are back: We heard you! At your request, we've brought back custom shortcut keys.

Other changes

Microsoft is also making changes to Excel this month. Again looking to user requests, the company has brought back custom shortcuts to the app:

“Many users find that using an external keyboard with keyboard shortcuts for Excel for Mac helps them work more efficiently. For users with mobility or vision disabilities, keyboard shortcuts can be easier than using the touchscreen and are an essential alternative to using a mouse.”

Across the three core Office apps, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, Microsoft has added the draw with ink ability. All three applications also scored improvements for working with 3D models, including inserting features and rotations tools.
