While Microsoft is finalizing Redstone 5 ahead of its launch next month as the Windows 10 October 2018 Update, the company is also looking to the future. Indeed, the Windows 10 19H1 update is currently available to Skip Ahead on the Inside. One app getting some love through the next major Windows release will be Sticky Notes 3.
More specifically, Microsoft is developing Sticky Notes 3.0. We wrote about this overhaul of the experience earlier this month, although beyond vague pointers to a deep sync system, we did not know what the update would bring.
That has now changed thanks to a report from OneWindows.es. Improving Syncing in Sticky Notes will work across platforms through the same Exchange tech used in Outlook Mail and Calendar.
On current Inside builds of version 3.0, a Settings options allows users to see when notes are synced to Outlook. Furthermore, users can choose whether to back up those noted through the Mailbox export feature.
Once the sync is done, Sticky Notes are placed within the Notes sections of the Outlook desktop app. If nothing more, Microsoft has made that little-used Outlook tab more useful. Either way, notes in Outlook will move the other way and be visible on Sticky Notes.
Update
Sticky Notes 3 is now being tested by Insiders on Skip Ahead. Microsoft has made other changes, so check out the changelog below:
- Sync (& backup) your notes across your Windows devices.
- If you have a lot of notes, your desktop can get a bit crowded! We are introducing a new home for all your notes. You can choose which notes to stick to your desktop or tuck them away and find them again easily with search.
- Before all the beautiful sunshine arrived, we channelled our dark energy into a dark themed note: Charcoal Note.
- Crossing tasks off feel better than deleting them! Now you can style your note with the new formatting bar.
- You may notice that Sticky Notes is performing a lot faster – that is completely on purpose.
- We’ve applied so much polish that the app is starting to look like a shiny pony!
- Drastic improvements on being more inclusive:
- Using assistive technologies and Narrator.
- Keyboard navigation.
- Using mouse, touch, and pen.
- High Contrast.

Mobile Expansion
Earlier this month, I reported on Microsoft’s push to bring Sticky Notes to iOS and Android. This seems to be locked into the release of Sticky Notes 3 and will bring the syncing capabilities to mobile.
If you are unfamiliar with Sticky Notes, it is a note-taking app that allows users to place notes anywhere on their screen. Essentially a post-it note system for Windows 10, the feature may take on a new life on mobile devices.
