Xbox Insiders Get Support for Dolby Vision HDR in Limited Test

Xbox Insiders on Alpha and Skip Ahead Rings can now utilize Dolby Vision HDR, providing frame-by-frame adjustments to contrast, shadows, and highlights on compatible TVs.

is rolling out support for Dolby Vision HDR to Xbox One Insiders. A limited number of users on and S will get the option, adding to the current HDR10 support.

“Starting with the Alpha Skip Ahead and Alpha rings, Xbox Insiders with a compatible TV can enjoy Dolby Vision streaming content on  on and Xbox One X,” revealed Xbox Insider lead Bradley Rossetti.

In short, Doby Vision is a more advanced version of HDR10. It promises dynamic metadata that enables different outputs for each individual frame. Rather than a blanket application, Dolby Vision looks at each individual scene to determine the correct brightness, contrast, and color ratios.

Real-world tests of Dolby Vision indicate that the difference isn't night and day, but users can expect a superior picture in most cases. In comparison to SDR, it's a huge leap offering brighter highlights, darker shadows, and better contrast.

Enabling Dolby Vision HDR

However, Xbox users need to configure Dolby Vision HDR before they use it with Netflix. Alpha Ring Insiders with a compatible TV will notice a new option under Settings>Display and Sound>Video models.

After ticking the relevant option, users should be aware that not all content on Netflix supports Dolby Vision. It's limited primarily to recent Netflix Originals, including Daredevil, Marco Polo, Jessica Jones, and more.

Microsoft is yet to speak to plans for rival video services, but Vudu and Amazon Video both support Dolby Vision HDR and have Xbox apps.
