Microsoft Prepping Big Changes for File Explorer on Windows 10

Redstone 5 previews show the File Explorer app for Windows 10 is gaining some important new usage tools and features.

There are some significant changes coming to the app. For example, Microsoft will add drag and drop support. Additionally, general navigation in the app will be improved, while File Explorer score some new UI buttons.

The full list of changes coming to the app through Redstone 5 are listed below:

  • Drag and drop support.
  • Better right-click menu support.
  • Improved copy/paste system similar to legacy File Explorer.
  • New cut option.
  • Can set images as wallpaper directly from the app.
  • UI buttons at the top instead of the bottom of the app.

All the changes will come to Windows 10 users with the October 2018 Update. Microsoft provided the next Win10 upgrade with its full 1809 version number. This means Redstone 5 will be finalized in September before a launch in October.

Dark Theme

Perhaps the biggest change coming to the Windows 10 File Explorer is a new dark theme. Earlier this month, Microsoft introduced the dark theme in Windows 10 Preview build 17733.

Microsoft first started previewing the dark theme for File Explorer in May. As the name of the theme suggests, the app will get a black side panel and title bar. Microsoft says the latest preview release completes its plans for the dark theme on File Explorer.

That means the theme is ready for Windows 10 Redstone 5. The nest major upgrade release for Windows 10 is expected to land in October, likely called the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.
