Microsoft Announces Major SharePoint Online Previews for September Release

SharePoint Online is getting some major features over the next few months, with a strong focus on Hub Sites and customization options.

-

has some big plans for through September. The company is preparing some new features for a preview release next month. Among the changes will be emphasis on Hub Site features and new Site Script additions.

In brief, users will be able to create up to 100 SharePoint Online hub sites. Sites can be adjusted automatically, while other editing tools will arrive, such as the ability to change the color of site headers.

Additional changes coming to SharePoint Online Hub Sites are page editing tools and layouts for web parts.

Under the current system, customers can only create 50 Hub Sites in SharePoint Online. Microsoft says support for 100 sites is coming to select users in September before a wide release “by the end of the November”.

Hub Sites are designed to implement their theme onto associated sites, which is not always wanted by developers. To solve this, Microsoft will preview more customization for IT process. Site Scripts means permitted dev's “can now be further configured using powerful site designs and site scripts to adjust and enforce permissions, apply shared metadata, preferred content management and policies.”

More New Features

Microsoft is also allowing users to change the color of a site header on SharePoint Online. This will give users the ability to tweak their default color by making it darker or lighter. There is also an option to make the header grey.

Also coming next month is the ability to spread news from anywhere:

“News links – you can share a link to items like existing news within your company, news from your public website, LinkedIn articles, and so on. Within your site, click New > News link (or from within the News web part), paste in the full URL from the original source and the service will automatically show an image, title, and description for the link when available.

Each of these values can be edited by the author. Once you save it, the news article goes into the SharePoint news service as a new News article visible on the site, SharePoint home in , and the SharePoint mobile apps News tab. When a person clicks on a news link, and they will be taken to the original source to read the article.”
