Microsoft Updates HoloLens with First Windows 10 Redstone 5 Preview

Windows Insiders using HoloLens are finally on the Windows 10 Redstone branch with a new update for the headset.

If you own 's HoloLens headset, you can still be classed as an early adopter even though the device is two years old. The company is gearing up to release HoloLens 2 to consumers next year, but the first “Developer Edition” is getting some new features in the next Windows update.

HoloLens users on the Windows Insider Program are receiving the first (rs5) preview for the device. As expected for a first build this late into the rs5 development branch, the update is extensive.

Insiders running the April 2018 Update will see Redstone 5 version 10.0.17720.1000 on their HoloLens. As all users a running a developer edition, the device can be set to receive Insider builds. To do this, just head to Settings>Update & Security>Windows Insider Program and choose “Get Started”.

This is a fairly rich update that includes the ability to stop and start recordings from the quick actions menu. Microsoft has also introduced Miracast support. Users can now send projections to a Miracast device.

Features

Microsoft has made numerous tweaks and usability improvements for HoloLens. Check out the full changelog below:

  • Stop video capture from the Start or quick actions menu: To start recording, select Start > Video. To stop recording, select Start > Stop video.
  • Project to a Miracast-enabled device: On Start, select Connect. Select the device you want to project to.
  • View and respond to notification toasts on HoloLens, just like you do on a PC: You'll now see notifications from apps that provide them. Gaze to respond to or dismiss them (or if you're in an immersive experience, use the bloom gesture).
  • You'll now see overlays such as the keyboard, dialogs, file picker, etc. when using immersive apps.
  • When you use the volume up/down buttons on your HoloLens you'll see a visual display of the volume level.
  • A loading indicator was added during the boot process to provide visual feedback that the system is loading.
  • Addition of the Windows Nearby Sharing experience, allowing you to share a capture with a nearby Windows device.
  • Share button is now available on Microsoft Edge windows on HoloLens.

Some of the release also focuses on giving developers new tools. For example, dev's now have support for Holographic Camera Capture UI API. Microsoft has also included improvements for Mixed Reality Capture.
