Windows 10 July Patch Tuesday Arrives with Five Improvements

A smaller Patch Tuesday than normal saw Microsoft make just five changes and report no known issues in Windows 10.

July's is now out in the wild and rolling out to users around the world. has debuted its monthly security and performance cumulative updates. In terms of book-keeping, this moves Windows 10 up to build number 17134.165. Users will see the patch listed as “KB4338819” in Windows Update.

This Patch Tuesday is smaller than usual. Indeed, Microsoft says there are no known issues and only five improvements have been made. Of those limited changes, several are important.

Microsoft has supplied the following changelog:

  • Improves the ability of the Universal CRT Ctype family of functions to correctly handle EOF as valid input.
  • Enables debugging of WebView content in UWP apps using the Microsoft Edge DevTools Preview app that's available in the Microsoft Store.
  • Addresses an issue that may cause the Mitigation Options Group Policy client-side extension to fail during GPO processing. The error message is “Windows failed to apply the MitigationOptions settings. MitigationOptions settings might have its own log file” or “ProcessGPOList: Extension MitigationOptions returned 0xea.” This issue occurs when Mitigation Options has been defined either manually or by Group Policy on a machine using Security Center or the Set-ProcessMitigation cmdlet.
  • Evaluates the Windows ecosystem to help ensure application and device compatibility for all updates to Windows.
  • Security updates to Internet Explorer, Windows apps, Windows graphics, Windows datacenter networking, Windows wireless networking, Windows virtualization, Windows kernel, and Windows Server.

Patch Tuesday

The monthly Patch Tuesday updates are a major component of how Microsoft runs Windows 10. The OS is very much a platform-as-a-service. Microsoft sends out two annual major build updates that comes with new features. These have been codenamed Redstone in recent years and include the recently launched April 2018 Update

Patch Tuesday's are monthly cumulative releases that serve to keep Windows 10 stable in-between major feature upgrades.
