MSN News’ Microsoft Rebrand Goes Live with Fluent Design Additions for Insiders

MSN News is now Microsoft News, bringing a renewed search engine, fluent design elements, and other minor design changes. The app is now live for Insiders.

MSN News is now ‘Microsoft News’ thanks to an app rebrand that brings additional features. The app previously debuted on iOS and Android, signaling its move away from the MSN brand.

The release also means access from Windows 10 Mobile devices, but is currently limited to Insiders on the Fast Ring. The app aggregates content from The Guardian, The Washington Post, The New York Times, Fox News, USA Today and more to deliver photo, video, and text content.

MSN News to Microsoft News Changelog

Naturally, the app is available for free and ships with Windows 10 by default. The update brings the app for version 4.25.11762.0 and brings changes to design and behind-the-scenes processes:

  • “MSN News becomes Microsoft News
  • Renewed initial splash screen (now animated)
  • Introduced the fluent design (for the hamburger menu)
  • News search engine renewed
  • Introduced a new link to download ‘Microsoft News’ on mobile devices
  • Other corrections and improvements”

Despite the name change, MSN.com will remain, with a disclaimer that it’s “powered by Microsoft News”. In terms of end users, this is essentially a rebranding and nothing more. However, Microsoft says the new service highlights its consolidation of tools and services into a single aggregating platform for news curation.

As well as leveraging machine learning and AI, the app has been transitioning to a more customizable experience. The app will offer different news based on location, preferences, interests, and more, taking the information from services like Skype, Xbox, Outlook, and Edge.

Insiders can grab the new Microsoft News now from the Microsoft Store.
