Report: Microsoft to Announce Movies Anywhere Integration Soon

WalkingCat suggests Microsoft is working with Movies Anywhere to bring the cloud-streaming service back to Windows and Xbox.

Microsoft’s movie media options have often been criticized, especially when compared to rivals like Apple, Amazon, and Google. However, the company is starting to move in the right direction according to WalkingCat. The Microsoft leaker says the company is working on a partnership with Movies Anywhere.

No additional details were added, other than a tweet stating a Microsoft and Movies Anywhere tweet is expected soon. Given the track-record of leaker WalkingCat as a reliable source, there is no doubt that we can expect some news about a deal in the near future.

If you are unfamiliar with Movie Anywhere, it is a cloud-based streaming platform which used to show exclusive content from Disney. Last year, the US-specific service switched to accept content from other studios but is still owned by Disney.

Many Windows 10 and Xbox users in the US may remember Movies Anywhere on their devices. Microsoft used to host the service but the contract between the companies wound down a year ago.

It is important to note that Movies Anywhere does not function as a streaming service like Netflix. Instead it acts as an online curator of sorts, connecting to digital stores like iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play. This is important because it allows users to connect their media content across ecosystems, platforms, and devices.

Users can also purchase and download movies on the app. Microsoft has recently confirmed it was back in talks with Movies Anywhere to introduce the platform. With WalkingCat’s report today it seems those talks are complete, and Microsoft is ready to make an announcement.

Cloud Streaming

While Microsoft is looking to bolster its third-party cloud streaming offerings, the company’s own cloud-streaming ambitions revolve around game streaming. In April we reported on Microsoft’s plans to launch an integrated Xbox cloud streaming platform. That service could be launched within 3 years.
