Microsoft Edge Update Brings Split View Support on Apple iOS

The latest update for Microsoft Edge bumps the browser to version 42.2.0, available to beta testers on iOS for iPhone and iPad.

Among Edge announcements released today, the browser received an update on 's iOS platform. Specifically, Microsoft has updated its Safari competitor to version 42.2.0 on iPhones and iPad. Indeed, it is Apple's tablet device that gets the biggest new feature from this update.

on iPad now supports Apple's Split View on iOS. If you are unfamiliar with Split View, it's a feature that allows users to multi-task by having two apps or services open at the same time.

While that is probably the most important new features, Microsoft Edge does score some others in version 42.2.0. For example, users can now edit or add top sites in the new tab page, which is important for people who visit certain sites more than others.

Also on board this update is the ability to see how favorites and reading lists are syncing with a progress base. As usual, Microsoft has also been making fixes, this time focusing on an issue in Microsoft Rewards that was stopping users from getting points.

Lastly, Microsoft Edge is getting an improved system for reading books within the browser. Adding bookmarks and changing text spacing will help users customize their reading experience more to their taste.

It is worth noting that the 42.2.0 update for Edge is limited to beta users on TestFlight for the time being. We guess Microsoft will roll out the update for general users in the coming weeks.

Google WebP Format Support

Earlier today, Microsoft also announced Google WebP Format Support for Edge. This is specifically for and was released with Windows 10 build 17692. However, it seems the support is limited as users still need to download an extension from the Microsoft Store.

These days Microsoft Edge is no longer a Windows exclusive. It is unclear whether the company will bring WebP Format support to its other Edge versions. There are now apps on  iOS, Android, and Chrome versions of the browser.
