If you use Microsoft’s Skype communication service on Android, you are going to see another update in Google Play. The company has rolled out a new feature and app improvements on Google’s mobile platform.
This update has been sent out quietly, without an official announcement, although it does get a changelog. It is focused on delivering changes that Microsoft says were based on feedback from users.
Arguably the most significant addition is full support for Android call intents. This is an Android feature that allows users to tap on a phone number in an app or browser to make a call directly with Skype. To do so, you will need to have Skype Credit and press any phone number to see the call option.
In terms of new features, that’s it. As always, Microsoft has delivered undescribed stability and reliability improvements. The update is available no on the Google Play Store.
Recent Updates
Microsoft has been busy recently with Skype-focused updates on Android. Two weeks ago, the company introduced touch type Skype stickers on the SwiftKey keyboard.
The 24 Skype emoticons represent the first time Microsoft has brought the stickers outside Skype. Indeed, it seems this will remain the case as Microsoft is promoting the integration as an exclusive for SwiftKey.
In March, Microsoft made optimizations to Skype to allow the app to work on older Android devices. Considering how fragmented the platform is, it was a wise choice that will put Skype on more devices.
The new version of the app allows devices running Android version 4.0.3 to 5.1 to run Skype. Microsoft explains the app is now “lighter on both disk and memory consumption,” and users will experience better audio and video.
