Microsoft Updates Project Honolulu Preview with VM Management Tools

Technical Preview 1712 Build 05002 of Project Honolulu is now available for Windows Server through the Insider Program.

-

has announced a new preview of its Project Honolulu graphics management tool. Technical Preview 1712 Build 05002 is now available to users on the Windows Insider Program.

If you are unfamiliar with Project HonoLulu, it is a flexible and lightweight graphics solution. It is browser-based feature that allows troubleshooting, maintenance, and configuration in Windows Server scenarios.

In November, Microsoft released Project Honolulu Technical Preview 1711 Build 01003. That particular update introduced Switch Embedded Teaming and Remote Desktop improvements.

With Technical Preview 1712 Build 05002, Microsoft has some new abilities for Honolulu. The company has focused on bringing new features to Virtual Machines, something the company says has been much-requested.

Specifically, Project Honolulu now allows users to change VM settings while a virtual machine is running. Customers using Hyper-V Manager will already be familiar with this ability. People running Generation 2 VMs are now able to change general settings, checkpoint settings, and memory settings.

Nested virtualization can be enabled during the creation of a VM, or within an existing virtual machine. Previously, this feature was limited to command line.

Microsoft has also announced the following changes:

  • “Events: Administrative events are now displayed.
  • Performance improvements: The new data grid control has been added to all tools except the HCI solution and Storage Replica.
  • We have started rolling out a new tree control with the same scale and performance improvements as the new data grid. The new tree control is implemented in the Files and Registry tools.”

Availability

As mentioned, this is a Windows Insider Program release. That means you will need to be a part of Microsoft's preview program. If you are already there, you can pull in the new Project Honolulu update now.

Microsoft says there are no known issues with this build.
