Adobe Announces Five New Creative Cloud Apps, Including Lightroom

Adobe has updated Lightroom as an entirely new cloud experience, while rebranding the legacy app. At its MAX event, the company also announced XD, Spark, Dimension, and Character Animator.

Adobe is hosting its MAX event today and had some important announcements to make. The company debuted five new apps that will join its Creative Cloud service portfolio. XD, Spark, and Dimension are design-based apps, while Character Animator is for Video. The fifth is called Lightroom, and seems to be the app Adobe is most proud of.

A photo application for Creative Cloud users, Lightroom is already available. However, Adobe has completely revamped the application and there are now two separate experiences. The older app has been rebranded as Lighthouse Classic, while the new app brings plenty of interesting features.

For what it’s worth, Adobe is using the rebranding of the older app to say it will continue to support the legacy experience.

As for the new Lightroom CC, Adobe has moved the app entirely to the cloud. It is available across Desktop mobile, and gets a web version.

The company says it created the app based on the following principles:

  • Powerful yet simple — Lightroom CC will offer the powerful image editing that you want while being simple and intuitive to use. Our goal is that it will have everything you need and nothing you don’t.
  • Seamless experience across all your devices — Lightroom CC will work the same across desktop, mobile, and web. This allows you to move across your devices without needing to relearn or figure things out. Your photos and edits are all where you’d expect them to be.
  • Cloud Based — Everything you do in Lightroom CC is synced to the cloud. This means that you can access and work with your photos from any device (including multiple computers), and can easily share photos with others. All of your photos and all of the work that you do with them will be automatically backed up all the time.

Other Creative Cloud Applications

At MAX today, Microsoft also announced XD, Dimension, and Spark for design customers. XD is something we have discussed before and it has been in preview since last year. As we reported before, the app is a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app that is “built from the ground-up to quickly prototype and design engaging experiences, whether for mobile, web, or any digital touchpoint.”

Dimension is a 3D tool that aims to make working in 3D easier for graphic designers. Adobe Spark allows users to make “stunning graphics, web pages, and video stories in minutes“.
