The idea of a virtual assistant it to automate tasks and generally make a user's life easier. Microsoft has been developing Cortana to perform that job and the company says task based AI is the future. Today, Microsoft watcher WalkingCat has reported on an important new Follow Me feature for Cortana.
Follow Me leverages Cortana's abilities to offer guided navigation. To showcase the feature, WalkingCat published a video of its in action.
With Cortana voice assistance, users are guided with visual prompts on the screen. It is worth noting that the navigation here means around the Windows 10 UI. That means Follow Me could make navigating the platform easier.
In the video, we can see how a user can connect a Bluetooth device. A blue circle offers advice about which menus to click to get there. The Follow Me tool can be turned off by using ESC, but we think it could have usefulness for Windows 10 users, especially newcomers.
Microsoft has been working on using Cortana to improve the Windows 10 PC experience. The company has already showcased the ability to set up a PC with voice commands.
Cortana Collaboration with Amazon
Over the years, Microsoft has been developing Cortana in competition with Google, Apple, and Amazon. However, the company recently made a major announcement.
Cortana and Amazon's Alexa are now integrated with each other. Both companies believe working together is the best way to develop AI assisted technology. Amazon and Microsoft urged Apple and Google to consider joining their collaboration.
“Alexa as a guest on Cortana
With Alexa as a guest on Cortana, Cortana users will now have another way of making their lives easier with a great shopping experience. Say you are at work, and you receive a text from your partner saying, “We're running low on diapers.” In the future, on your Windows 10 PC, iPhone or Android phone, you could simply say, “Hey Cortana, open Alexa,” and ask Alexa to order diapers using your preferred payment method for your Amazon account.
Cortana as a guest on Alexa
With Cortana as a guest on Alexa, Alexa users will have access to some of Cortana's most useful productivity capabilities that help people stay organized and on top of what's important to them. What if you're making breakfast in the morning and need to know if you have enough time to drop off the dry-cleaning before work? On your Alexa device, you can say, “Alexa, open Cortana,” and ask when your first meeting is. If you won't have enough time, simply ask Alexa to open Cortana again and set a reminder for the end of your workday to drop off the clothes.”
