Microsoft Discusses News Features for Office 2016 on Mac

Office Insider Program members on the Fast Ring as moving to Office 2016 for Mac build 16.6 with new additions from the Windows version.


has made significant changes to Office 2016 for Mac recently. Specifically, the company has updated the productivity suite for Office Insiders on the Fast Ring branch. The new features were debuted by Derek Snook, the head of feature development for the Mc version of Office 2016.

The company says the new abilities will be available for subscription customers across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Among the new features is Real-time co-authoring and AutoSave for OneDrive and SharePoint files. Microsoft has also introduced a Share menu that make sharing content across OneDrive for Business easier:

  • Real-time co-authoring and AutoSave for OneDrive and SharePoint files. Changes are automatically saved as you work, and when you co-author with others, you can see their changes as they work.
  • A new Share menu makes it easier to share files that are stored on OneDrive for Business or SharePoint.
    PowerPoint QuickStarter is now on Mac! Powered by the Bing Knowledge graph, QuickStarter reinvents the deck creation process by building a presentation outline to help you get started researching a topic of your choosing.
  • New and modern chart types: Say hello to Waterfall, Funnel, Histogram, Pareto, Box & Whisker, Treemap and Sunburst-six powerful charts that help you quickly visualize common financial, statistical and hierarchical data.

Additional Features for Mac

Microsoft is not only focusing on Office 365 subscribers, but is also sending features to Office 2016 for Mac. For example, the company has improved Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.

Office 2016 for Mac is also getting some new objects and methods from the Windows Office versions. Microsoft is increasingly bringing the Mac and Windows Office versions closer together. However, it is worth noting that Windows is still further ahead in terms of overall features and abilities.

For the record, this release brings Office Fast Ring Insiders on Mac to build 16.6 (171001).
