Microsoft’s Insider Program has proven invaluable in crafting bug-free versions of Windows, and the company has been expanding it to other areas. Its Office suite, for example, has its own program, as does Xbox.
More recently, the company launched its Windows Insider Lab, which lets organizations test new Enterprise features before they ship.
It appears that the next expansion will target Surface Laptops. Though there’s been no official announcement from Microsoft, Windows Central reports the roll out of firmware updates exclusively to their Insider devices.
Executive editor Daniel Rubino says the publication’s Fast Ring devices received seven firmware updates. Shortly after, the changes rolled out to Release Preview, suggesting a tiered release.
Surface Laptop Firmware Update Details
Microsoft has listed no changes on its Surface Update History page, nor has it made a statement on the matter. However, we can gather some details from Windows Update, and changes appear to be relatively minor.
Windows Central notes the following:
- “UEFI going from 136.1668.769.0 to 136.1736.769.0
- Keyboard driver updates from generic 1.0.0 to 135.1713.0
- System Aggregator updates from 1.0.0 to 135.1704.1.0
- Trackpad driver updates from 1.0.0 to 2.122.2683.0″
There have also been changes to Surface Integration, Surface Integration Service Device, and System, but exact details aren’t known. It’s also not clear if this will be a regular thing, or simply a one-off test to gauge reactions.
If the reports are true, however, these builds should roll out to non-Insiders in the next couple of weeks. We expect a full changelog then, but with Surface Laptop already close to bug-free, don’t expect anything huge.
