HMD Global Announces the Nokia 8, Its First Flagship Mobile Device

The Nokia 8 features a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4 GB RAM, and dual 13MP back cameras. It will debut in September alongside the latest Samsung and Apple devices.

hasn't been lazy since its purchase of the brand from last year. The company, run by former Nokia execs, has pumped out three mid-range smartphone releases, and now it's shooting for the big leagues.

The Nokia 8 comes in at approximately $705, and at that price, HMD will be looking to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung. By most reports, it has a chance, but a small one. Though the device features a 2560×1440 5.3″ display and impressive specs, its bezels and design leave a little to be desired.

Rather than housing the fingerprint sensor on the back or screen, as has become popular, HMD has opted for a front facing button, giving it a slightly dated look. It does, however, have a solid unibody build, bringing back the textbook reliability of Nokia devices.

In terms of camera, HMD has chosen dual 13 MP back cameras, one color, and one black a white. However, alongside the phone's great f/2.0 Zeiss optics, HMD has thrown in another feature.

Bothies

In the vein of Frontback, the Nokia 8's camera will house a feature called DualSight lets users create ‘bothies'. It creates a split-screen video or picture using the front and back cameras simultaneously.

To me, the feature sounds like a bit of a gimmick, but for heavy social media users, support for live video streaming could be invaluable. It combines with Nokia OZO 360-degree spatial audio to bring put “Hollywood technology in the palm of your hand”.

Of course, the phone also needs to be able to run without a hitch, and it backed up by the usual flagship specs. It will feature a Snapdragon 835 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, and a 3090MAh battery.

The result is a phone that can compete with the likes of the OnePlus 5, but will likely apeal to a more niche market because of its price point, which is closer to the top of the line devices.

The Nokia 8 will be available in European markets for €599 in September, in a choice of four colors.
