Microsoft Launches Office for All Windows 10 S Installations

Office desktop from the Windows Store is now available on all Windows 10 S machines. Microsoft is debuting the suite with a special limited offer.

has been doing a lot this year with Office availability on . The suite is now available in app form on the . Office also arrived as a desktop app for , although only in a limited capacity until today.

WindowsBlogItalia (WBI) reports that Microsoft has launched Office desktop for all Windows 10 S PCs. To clarify, since launching the platform in May, the productivity suite was available for Microsoft's own Surface Laptop.

Since then, a trickle of running Windows 10 S have arrived. These devices are aiming to capitalize on the back-to-school market. If you are unfamiliar with the OS, it is a lighter version of Windows 10 aimed at educators and students.

With the ISO for Windows 10 S available for testers, Microsoft has also brought Office desktop to all installations.

As an introductory offer, Microsoft is throwing in one year of Personal on Surface devices with Windows 10 S. This subscription adds 1TB of free storage and complete Microsoft Words, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote.

Office apps in the Windows Store for Windows 10 S:

  • PowerPoint
  • Outlook (not available in preview for Office 365 Education plans)
  • Access (not available in preview for Office 365 Education plans)
  • Publisher (not available in preview for Office 365 Education plans)

Windows Store Limitations

Office in the Windows Store does some with some significant differences compared to the full suite. As these are Windows Store apps, they are 32-bit versions of Office services ported with Microsoft's Desktop App Convertor.

COM add-ins will not be supported in these apps, while the OneNote app is not getting migrated. Instead, Microsoft will continue to offer the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) version of its note taking app.
