Microsoft Announces Deeper Azure/Cloud Foundry Integrations

Azure services now further support the open source Cloud Foundry, while Microsoft was named as a gold member of the Cloud Foundry Foundation.

has been building ties with the Cloud Foundry and the community over the last year. Today, the company is continuing to embrace openness in the cloud with new Azure features for Cloud Foundry.

With this release, developers have access to Cloud Foundry's command line management tools. The new suite will improve the way open source infrastructure management software integrated with Microsoft's cloud services.

Microsoft says the management tools will be set to default in Azure Cloud Shell. Additionally, Cloud Foundry will also now integrate with Azure SQL Database. With the integration, dev's will be able to use Microsoft's database on their Cloud Foundry deployments.

The Azure Cloud Shell integration will allow customers to use commands over the internet that they would typically use on-premises.

Cloud Foundry is an open source community create to help developers easily create software without needing to worry about the underlying computing. It is functional in both public cloud and on-premises.

Gold Membership

Microsoft has been getting its Azure platform closer to the Foundry, while also strengthening ties with the Cloud Foundry Foundation. This is the organization that acts as an umbrella for projects. Microsoft today announced that it has become a gold member of the Foundation.

Corey Sanders, head of product for Azure Compute, says the company will now work on the Open Source Service Broker groups. This collective helps push create solutions that allow Cloud Foundry software to integrate with cloud providers.

For Microsoft, Sanders says the gold membership allows the company to see customer information. This data can be used to improve Azure.

“Microsoft and the Cloud Foundry community are deeply aligned around our mutual understanding of enterprise business and technical requirements, and our commitment to help organizations modernize their applications without vendor lock-in. By joining the Cloud Foundry Foundation, we will be able to work with members to contribute to Foundation initiatives and bring a wider range of solutions to for our customers and the community.”
