Microsoft Debuts Contacts-Centric Outlook Update for iOS

The latest release of Outlook for Apple’s mobile devices bumps the app to version 2.29.0 and brings the ability to add and edit contacts and view instant contact details.

iPhone and iPad users can today download a new update for their Outlook application. has sent out a new release for the iOS version of its mail app. This update brings the service up to version 2.29.0 on Cupertino's i devices.

This is the same update that Microsoft first announced last week. Since then, the company has finalized the build and released it to the App Store. users will also be getting the same abilities found in this release, although at a later date.

Build 2.29.0 of Outlook for iOS focuses on updating the contacts experience and making it more user friendly. Indeed, it is an extensive release that overhauls the Contacts and People parts of the app.

For example, users can now add and edit a contact directly in Outlook. To do this, head to the People tab and use the + symbol. Contacts can also be added directly when interacting with someone on email, simply by selecting “Add Contact”. A new search function lets users look for contacts, ideal for organizations with long mail lists.

Here is the full changelog:

  • Quickly access a person's details – including your past conversations, events and shared files – by tapping on their name in a conversation or event.
  • Add or edit contacts from within messages, calendar events or directly in the People tab. All changes will be saved to your account and available on all of your devices. (Office 365 accounts only)
  • Enable caller ID and access your Outlook contacts from your phone's Contacts app by turning on “Save Contacts” in Outlook > Settings. (Office 365 accounts only)

More Contacts Features

The ability to glance at contact details is hugely welcome. The Contacts experience in Outlook as often been annoying, but it is certainly improved now.

A new contact card design means users can see details by tapping on a name in the message. Microsoft has placed the most vital details at the front. This means you can instantly see details such as email address, phone number, and Skype ID.

Tapping these details, such as the phone number, will allow you to choose a contact method between phone, message, or FaceTime.
