Microsoft: No Support for Office for Mac 2011 on macOS 10.13 High Sierra

Users will have to upgrade to the already existing Office 2016 for Mac when they update to the new OS of Apple, starting October 10th, 2017.

has announced that it will stop support for Office for Mac 2011 on the upcoming macOS 10.13 High Sierra operating system. Apple recently unveiled its new OS at its WorldWide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2017, and Microsoft has followed up with ending support for the older version of .

In its announcement, Microsoft says that it will stop supporting all applications in the Office for Mac 2011 suite on October 10th, 2017. The company explains that after that date, there will be “no new security updates, non-security updates, free or paid assisted support options or technical content updates.

Of course, users can get their hands on the applications in the Office for Mac 2016  suite, which has been available for two years now. Users will specifically need to run macOS version 15.35 or later to get Office for Mac 2016 running on their devices.

However, Microsoft clarifies that Office for Mac 2016  won't be supported while macOS 10.13 High Sierra is in beta. The company cautions that “Not all Office functionality may be available, and you may encounter stability problems where apps unexpectedly quit.

Equally important to Microsoft's announcement, is the release of the macOS 10.13 High Sierra operating system. As mentioned above, unveiled its new OS at its WWDC 2017 which brings several new features.

Following the unveiling, Apple released a Developer Beta of the OS, which you can install following these steps:

  1. Go to Apple Developer, and go to Develop -> Downloads.
  2. The second item on the list will be macOS 10.13; click the download link.
  3. Open the file that downloads, and follow the onscreen instructions to install it.
  4. Once that's done, you should land on the page in the Mac App Store for High Sierra. Click the link to obtain it (after you do this, you will find it under the Purchased tab).
  5. After it downloads, follow the onscreen instructions to install it. You'll be asked if you want to convert your Mac to the Apple File System unless you have a mid-2012 Mac Pro or iMac with a 3TB Fusion drive and BootCamp, where APFS isn't supported yet.
