Microsoft yesterday rolled out Windows 10 Insider Preview build 16199 for PCs on the Fast Ring. This was a Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (Redstone 3) release and came with several important new features. However, one new addition was merely teased by Microsoft. Luckily, a Windows Central report provides some answers.
One image for a new Windows 10 feature also showed an interesting settings cog in the taskbar. This icon was beside the clock and is new. As you can see in the image, it is the same icon as the regular settings cog throughout the platform.
The obvious purpose for this new icon is merely as a shortcut to the Settings app within Windows 10. However, Windows Central reached out to sources and found a compelling new feature is coming to the platform.
Microsoft is actually testing a new Control Center that will be launched with the Fall Creators Update. Of course, this functionality is not ready just yet and this week’s build provided a leak/tease. Windows Insiders can expect to see the fledglings of this new feature soon.
Control Center
The new Control Center brings refreshed experience to Windows 10. Microsoft has moved the Quick Action buttons into a dedicated panel that can be accessed via the settings cog in the taskbar.
Users can still expand the Control Center for a larger view which shows clearer labels for Quick Action buttons.
It should be noted that the current Notification Center may retain its name under this new guise. Or, Microsoft will rename it to Control Center with a minimalist design seen above. Microsoft has already started placing the new feature into Insider build. It is disabled at the moment, but that should change soon.
