Microsoft has officially announced its Surface Laptop as part of today’s education event. Though yesterday’s leak revealed some details about the device, today Panos Panay has gone into detail about the hardware that runs it.
Firstly, that 13.5″ screen has 3.4 million pixels and is the thinnest LCD touch module on a laptop. As you would expect, it works perfectly with the Surface Pen, and Panay previewed it during the event.

However, the real interest is the specs. Here’s a rundown of the base model:
- Processor: up to 7th Gen Core i5 (i7 model available)
- Storage: 128 GB SSD (up to 1TB PCI Express)
- RAM: 4 GB (up to 8GB)
- Battery Life: 15.5 hours
- Operating System: Windows 10 S
- I/O: USB-A, DisplayPort, headphone jack
The battery life improvements are thanks, in part, to the way the Surface Laptop works with standby mode. Shutting the lid on the device means that its battery will not deplete no matter how long you leave it. Panos says you can go on spring break, come back, and face the exact same battery percentage.

The most expensive model is faster than the Macbook Air by 50%, and also the Core i7 Macbook Pro, but still has more battery life. Microsoft also has an answer to the Macbook’s TouchBar in the form of the Surface dial. It can be used in tandem with the laptop to get context-aware menus, controlling Spotify, 3D applications, and more.
The Surface Laptop will launch in four colors: cobalt blue, burgundy, graphite gold, and platinum. It also appears to have an alcantara keyboard, the premium fabric some Surface Pro 4 users will be familiar with.
Of course, this design and performance doesn’t come cheap. Microsoft will be charging $999 for the base model. Pre-orders start today, with the full release on June 15.
