Microsoft has hired former FTC Commissioner Julie Brill to head its Privacy and Regulatory Affairs Group. She will be working to integrate privacy standards established by the new European Union General Data Regulation.
Brill’s position is a significant one, and she will report directly to president and chief legal officer Brad Smith.
Speaking of the hire, Smith said, “Cloud computing, big data and artificial intelligence have the potential to drive profound and positive change across society, but they raise new issues and responsibilities as well. Julie’s deep expertise in privacy, keen intellect and strong international relationships will enable our customers to use the Microsoft Cloud knowing that we will help meet their global technology regulatory needs.”
Hogan Lovells
Julie Brill had a very successful six-year stint as FTC commissioner, receiving the 2014 Privacy Leadership Award, and more. However, following her step down in 2016, she worked at law firm Hogan Lovells.
There she was the co-director of the Privacy and Cybersecurity practice. It’s clear, then, that Brill is an expert in this area, and she seems happy to work with Microsoft.
“I’ve been deeply impressed by Microsoft’s commitment to privacy, their willingness to stand up for customers and their focus on offering constructive solutions to new challenges,” she said in a statement. “I’ve always tried to do the same throughout my career in government. I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to contribute in a new and particularly meaningful way.”
Brill will also focus on telecommunications regulation, internet governance, and more. This includes legal challenges that impact the accessibility of products. She will begin her position at the company this summer.
